Regency Encounters cordially invites us to their Pride and Prejudice Ball on May 13th in Calgary!

Regency Encounters is hosting a costume ball in the style of Jane Austen, with dancing, live music, food, cards and enormous fun, in the stunning Crystal Ballroom of the historical Palliser Hotel. We teach the dances, which require no partner and no dance experience. We offer two dance lessons, one on April 29 at 1:00 pm, and one the day of the ball at 11:00 am. Both take place at the Kerby Centre. Register below for either or both. We also have rental costumes and accessories available for our guests. They can be viewed, tried on and rented at a free “Costume Fair” on April 29 at 4:00 pm at the Kerby Centre.

Here are some answers to FAQ’s regarding the ball. Do let us know if there are others:
You do NOT need to come with a dance partner, and you may dance with anyone you like. It is not ballroom dance but English Country Dance, which is very different. Lots of people come solo, or as groups, and couples of all descriptions are welcome.
Dance lessons are not mandatory, but strongly recommended if you have never done this kind of dance before. Register for the dance lessons on the ticket site. You do not need to have any kind of dance experience. Everyone can learn these dances.

We have rental costumes in a variety of sizes, including plus sizes, with prices starting at $35 a rental, plus a $50 deposit. You can try these on at the “Costume Fair” on April 29th. They must be returned the day after the ball. Please see the album on the Regency Encounters page called “Rental Costumes.” We have a few that are not shown there, but it does give some idea of what is available.

If you are going to other costume rental shops, ask for “Regency” or “Napoleonic” or “Colonial” style dress. Military and naval uniforms are also a great option for men, and can sometimes be more readily acquired than civilian dress.

Also have long, white gloves and long socks (both of which can be hard to find). You can purchase these from me at the dance lessons, or at the ball itself.
Flat shoes or shoes with TINY heels only, please. High heels were not worn at this time, and can be dangerous for dancing.

Dress code minimum for ladies is a full-length gown with covered shoulders. For gentlemen, the minimum is a tail coat. The more historically accurate the better, but that is the minimum.

Ladies may come in gentlemen’s dress if they prefer. All dietary requirements can be accommodate with adequate notice. Simply message me and we will pass the info on to the hotel.

There is no formal age minimum, but we recommend guests be at least 14 years of age. It is not suitable for younger children, though it is possible that very keen and well-behaved 13 or even 12 year old accompanied by an attentive adult would do very well.

There will be a professional photographer capturing the event, and taking portrait photographs of all guests. You will be able to download these after the event.
Cell phones and cameras are not permitted in the ballroom itself, but may be used anywhere else in the hotel.

This event is THE MOST FUN you imagine. It is highly addictive and can make the rest of life seem dull in comparison.
