Introducing the 1st Annual Calgary Event Awards to recognize excellence in the Events industry, as well to promote connecting among local event professionals.


An attendance of over 200 local event professionals for our inaugural Calgary Event Awards was a classy event by Timewise Event Management Inc! The Award show recognized winners in 18 categories followed by a catered after-party. They were thrilled to be able to recognize excellence in the events industry.

Building upon the success of the Edmonton Event Awards in February 2016, with an attendance of 350 event professionals, Calgary Events were excited to introduce this annual awards program in Calgary, on March 2, 2017 at the Theatre Junction GRAND.

The Calgary Event Awards are organized impartial from industry associations and is the first program designed to recognize excellence across every aspect of our industry in the Greater Calgary Region. This program is not associated with, nor designed to replace, the Calgary White Hat Awards or MPI Chinook Awards.

It is important to us to engage judges who are in your local industry. Thus we are very strategic in selecting judges. We look to engage 4-5 individuals that are upper management in larger organizations or individuals who have been in the industry for a long time. These individuals bring extensive experience and industry involvement to the process. We also feel they are more likely to have and be perceived as having minimal bias.

Jean Silzer

As founder of Details Convention & Event Management, Jean Silzer, CMP, has provided conference and event management services to the Calgary meetings and event industry for over 27 years.

When Jean received the Certified Meeting Professional (CMP) designation in 1990, Jean was the first person in Alberta to receive this designation. In working to teach future meeting professionals, Jean chaired and co-wrote the revisions to Meeting Planners International’s (MPI) textbook MPI’s Planning Guide – A Source for Meetings and Conventions.  In March 2010, the Meetings and Incentive Travelmagazine announced 2010 Hall of Fame winners with Jean as the 2010 Industry Builder inductee. The Industry Builder Award recognizes an individual planner or supplier who has developed best practices, created professional guidelines, and/or who has built a product or service that has improved the way the industry does business.

Wes Scott

Wes joined dmg :: events Canada in June 2000 as the Sales Manager.  Over the past fifteen years he has taken on more responsibilities and currently serves as Executive Vice President.  As the EVP, Wes has overall management responsibility for a staff of forty and is responsible for overseeing dmg events’ portfolio of energy related events in Canada, USA and Latin America; as well as launching a number of new business initiatives in North and South America.  Key brands within this portfolio include the Global Petroleum Show, International Pipeline Exposition, World Heavy Oil Congress, Oil Sands Trade Show & Conference, and Heavy Oil Latin America.

Prior to joining dmg, Wes managed a not-for-profit technical organization known as the Petroleum Society of the Canadian Institute of Mining, Metallurgy and Petroleum and the Journal of Canadian Petroleum Technology; which has now been amalgamated into the Canadian section of the Society of Petroleum Engineers.  Within this role he oversaw the association’s primary activities which included training, conferences, publishing, and membership services.

Clark Grue

Clark Grue is the new President & CEO of the Calgary TELUS Convention Centre.  A passionate promoter of Calgary, he is excited to continue to build the centre’s reputation on its status as a world-class, innovative centre for connecting people and ideas.

Mr. Grue was a co-founder of Rainmaker Global Business Development Inc. where he assisted public and private companies in their quest for sustainable business development, economic growth and diversification.

Prior to launching Rainmaker, Mr. Grue served as Vice President, Investment and Trade with Calgary Economic Development. In addition, he established and led the British Trade Office in Calgary, the first of its kind in the world.

Shelley Zucht-Shorter
Shelley is the Vice President of In-destination and Event Services for Tourism Calgary. For the past 7 ½ years Shelley and her team have been responsible for executing a strategic tourism plan that includes sport & major event hosting, in-destination marketing, business development, and creating and delivering Tourism Calgary’s signature events. She is passionate about creating remarkable and memorable guest experiences and has worked on over 100 high profile events during her career, most recently the JUNO’s in 2016, and her pride and joy: the annual Calgary White Hat Awards. Shelley is active on the following community boards and advisory committees: Canada 150, the Calgary White Hat Awards, City of Calgary Event Advisory Committee, Breakfast on the Bridge committee in support of the Calgary Military Family Resource Centre, the Every Woman Foundation, SKAL Calgary, Canada’s Sport Heroes committee, and the Celebration of Sport advisory committee.
