A Passionate Beginning

Kit and Cade met at a creative event through mutual friends, bonding over their shared love of storytelling and good cinema. As storytellers at heart, they believe that film has the power to bring people together and create lasting memories. With a deep appreciation for the local arts scene, they aim to support and promote Canadian filmmakers and their work.

A Tale of Two Critics

Kit brings her storytelling background from her family's bonfire gatherings. She believes that good cinema should evoke emotions and leave a lasting impression.

Cade's experience in writing and storytelling stems from his family's dinner table conversations, where large personalities and passionate stories were shared. He looks for films that tell complete stories, evoke emotions, and uncover something about the person telling it.

Goals and Objectives

As a team, Kit and Cade aim to bring more awareness to the Canadian film industry by highlighting local talent and stories that reflect their community's culture, history, and social issues. They're not just looking to build a large following or become prominent voices in the industry; they want to share their passion for movies with others and provide constructive feedback to filmmakers.

The Review Process

When reviewing movies, Kit and Cade consider factors such as plot, character development, setting, and themes. They seek out films that tackle tough topics and bring minority perspectives to the forefront. To decide which movies to review, they look at relevance, popularity, genre, audience interest, critical acclaim, and cultural significance.

Collaboration and Decision-Making

Kit and Cade always watch movies together before reviewing them. Afterward, they discuss their thoughts on the film's strengths and weaknesses, sharing their individual perspectives to create a comprehensive review. They rarely disagree on movies, but when they do, they use those differences to spark further discussion and learning.

Origin Story and Team Dynamics

1. How did you two meet and decide to start a movie review team? What common interests or experiences brought you together?

— We met locally at a creative event through mutual friends. We are both story tellers that love good cinema. We feel very strongly about supporting local arts and bringing the community together.

2. What are your individual backgrounds and experiences in film criticism, and how do these influence your perspectives on the movies you review?

— Kit: I come from a family of storytellers next to the bonfire on the beach : I want people to look at cinema as a creative memory making experience.

Cade: All my best memories come from the dinner table. Good food and good stories. Large personalities with expression and passion in the stories being told. Story telling and writing these stories down became a norm. Something I look for in good cinema is if the story is complete, does it make me feel, and does it uncover something about the person telling it.

Goals and Objectives

3. What are your goals for your movie review team? Do you hope to build a large following, become a prominent voice in the film industry, or simply share your passion for movies with others?

— We are looking to bring more awareness to Canadian film industry by reaching the Phil and Janes that have no clue how much is going on right in our backyard. The rest of the things will come.

4. How do you approach reviewing movies, and what do you hope to achieve with each review?

— We look for a great plot, character development, setting, and what are themes in the film. Reviewing local/Canadian films is crucial for several reasons. Firstly, it supports and promotes the local film industry, helping it gain visibility and recognition both domestically and internationally. Reviews can provide constructive feedback to filmmakers, encouraging artistic growth and innovation. They also help audiences discover and appreciate local talent and stories that reflect their own culture, history, and social issues. Furthermore, positive reviews can boost the film’s success, leading to increased viewership and funding for future projects. In essence, reviewing local films fosters a thriving and vibrant cultural landscape, essential for the community’s creative and economic development.

Reviews and Coverage

5. What types of movies are you looking to review, and what genres or topics do you feel most passionate about?

— We seek out movies created by minority groups and movies that bring tough topics to life.

6. How do you decide which movies to review, and what criteria do you use to select the films you’ll be covering?

— 3 key areas: relevance and popularity, genre and audience interest, critical and cultural significance.

Collaboration and Decision-Making

7. How do you collaborate on your reviews, and what is your process for deciding on the final score or rating for each movie?

— We always try to see the movies together.

What was the overall experience? We discuss the film right after watching: what we liked, what made or did not make sense, how did it make us feel, and if we felt it was a good storyline.

8. Do you have any disagreements or differing opinions on movies, and if so, how do you resolve them?

— We usually are aligned on opinions. There is the rare time that one of us saw or felt something that is different. Those are the areas that we explore further and discuss. These opinions make our reviews as we learn from each other.

Canadian Film

9. As a team based in Calgary, what are your thoughts on the Canadian film industry, and how do you see it evolving in the future?

— We noticed that most film festivals had either creatives or industry attendees- we're hoping to bridge the gap that film events are for everyone- movies bring people together. Canadian film is filled with some incredible cinema made by independent production houses and we want to welcome more communities into this space.

10. Are there any specific Canadian filmmakers or films that you're particularly excited about, and why?

— There are some exciting up and coming producers and directors coming up-! We are looking forward to attend the next film festival as well as seeking out special events or viewing parties that help support local talent.

Learn more all about them and what they are trying to do for Alberta Film!

Thank you to everyone a part of this shoot today and your hard work.
